Spring Break at Riverview CC

Today marked the first day of Riverview Community Centre’s Spring Break!

The morning program is organized by the CLER program.

9:30 – 10:00 am   Learn to knit!

10:00 – 10:40 am Earth focused drama activities

10:40 – 11:30 Outdoor nature activities

Today’s students were so into their knitting that we didn’t do any drama work. Once our outdoor activity was done, we had boys climbing trees and some of the girls discussed which tree they would get married under.

Today’s outdoor activity was: Find Your Tree

Preparation: To do this activity you’ll need to find some woods or a park where there are many trees.

1. Have participants pair up, and ask one person in each pair to put on a blindfold. Invitethe others to carefully lead their partner on a roundabout journey to a tree they pick outfor their partner to “meet.” Tell the blindfolded partner to feel the tree thoroughly, as highas they can reach, down at the base of the trunk, and around the perimeter. When theythink they know their tree, have the partners lead them, also in a roundabout way, backto where they started.

2. Have the participants remove their blindfolds and go look for their trees.

3. Have the partners reverse their roles and repeat the activity.

* This activity is from the power and promise of humane education

Please join us tomorrow for all or part of the morning. After today’s event one of the participants said, “I’ll never look at these trees the same way again.”
